The California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal (CalAIM)
What is CalAIM? CalAIM (California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal) is a multi-year initiative by DHCS to improve the quality of life and health outcomes of our population by implementing broad delivery system, program and payment reform across the Medi-Cal program. CalAIM will transition institutional long-term care to managed care statewide to better coordinate care, simplify administration, and provide a more integrated experience. Effective January 1, 2023, DHCS is requiring most non-dual and dual Long Term Care (LTC) Members to enroll in a Medi-Cal managed care health plans (MCPs) and receive their LTC benefits from their MCP.
Effective January 1, 2023, MCPs in all counties must authorize and cover medically necessary services provided in Skilled Nursing Facilities (SNFs) (both freestanding and hospital-based facilities.)
All MCPs must ensure that Members in need of SNF services are placed/stay in a healthcare facility that provides the level of care most appropriate to the Member’s medical/psychiatric needs.
This means that, beginning January 1, 2023, Members who are admitted into or stay in our SNFs will remain enrolled in a managed care plan (MCP).
Crestwood Behavioral Health, Inc. and Helios Healthcare LLC. are in the process of contracting with Medi-Cal managed care health plans (MCPs) to receive LTC benefits (payments) from the contracted plans.
